About Mr. Tickler
I grew up in Concord, California (a suburb 25 miles east of San Francisco) and graduated from Ygnacio Valley High School. From there I received my undergraduate degree in History from the University of California at Los Angeles. Following college I worked for a few years in the healthcare industry before changing careers to become a high school teacher. I completed my Teaching Credential through Cal State East Bay while interning as a full time teacher at Concord High School. Upon completion I continued to teach at CHS for six years. My wife and I moved to southern California in the summer of 2011 and I taught at Santa Monica High School for five years. In the summer of 2016 my family moved to Orange Country and I began first teaching at Mission Viejo High School. I am also working towards the completion of my Masters in American History through the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History.
Professionally, I was a Teacher Leader with the Teacher American History for All Grant which worked to increase understanding and appreciation for American History, improve students' understanding of historical content literacy, and encourage active involvement in the American democratic process. This grant was a partnership between the Mount Diablo School District and the University of California at Berkeley. I was selected by the California Council for Historical Education to present a lesson that was developed within the grant at the CCHE Annual Conference. Recently I attended a National Endowment for the Humanities Seminar, Empire City, at Columbia University.
I have been married for nine years now and am enjoying the domestication process that has ensued. My wife and I welcomed our first child, our daughter Madison in September 2015, our second daughter Paige in October 2018 and continue to raise our puppy Wooden.
I was an assistant coach for the SaMoHi Boys Varsity Basketball team. I worked with the Saint Mary's College Men's Basketball Team as the Volunteer Film Coordinator and I spent the previous 5 years with the CHS Boys Basketball program. I enjoy athletics greatly, having played basketball, baseball and water polo in high school. More recently I have competed in a number of triathlons and distance running races. Other interests include traveling, camping, reading, listening to music and relaxing in general.
